• I have many journals that sit on the shelf at home. They chronicle many aspects of my life. I love to look through them, enjoying the things I have written or the pictures there in. It is my hope that as you look through these pages, that you too will enjoy the things placed so lovingly here.
It has been a journey that has seen me through many joys and a few heartaches. From the start of Crimson Chickadee and my growth as a person and as a photographer. From the realization that how many fans I have on my facebook page does not merit my worth, to the swelling in my heart as I hit publish to a post that I know will mean so much to the intended recipient.
I hope you join me often, with a good cup of coffee, and enjoy these pages as much as I do creating them.

One Frame

On the way to the hockey game yesterday Raceboy83 looks at me and makes the profound statement that I am getting old. I laughed, agreed and then asked if he thought I was going to stay young forever. It really struck me as I was looking through the pictures I had taken at his game that he too is getting old. Where is the little boy who could barely stand, let alone skate? The one who needed mom to tie his skates? To carry his bag because it was twice his size?

December 15, 2011

It was over a year ago that I did a mentorship with a husband/wife photography team who shoots film. Not film from 15 years ago. I have one of those film cameras kicking around. In fact Raceboy82 uses it still. I mean old school film. I fell in love with the images they produced with it. I fell in love with the romance of it, how perfect would that fit into my branding I thought, after all I am always talking about our images being family heirlooms. I did not however fall in love with the price tag that I discovered was on the cameras they were shooting with.  Actually when I did a search on ebay I discovered that one of the cameras carried a price tag that rivaled my D700. EEK! I shelved the idea…for a while anyways.

The pull towards those old time images always gets me. It is hereditary,  I think. Step into momma Temps house and you will see at various times of the year, different “friends and family” tucked here and there. Mom collects those old pictures. You know how some people bring back a post card as a souvenir from the places they have traveled? Not mom, she finds some tucked away treasure of a store and finds a vintage photograph.  We imagine who they were and what they did, getting lost in the romance of the image. It is no wonder I am a photographer! lol  Being my mothers daughter I have been on the hunt. Literally. Every thrift store and antique store I can get into has me crawling the floor, peering up on shelves that require me to stand on my tippy toes, searching. Always searching. Someone has a treasure waiting for me to find.

Yesterday, I found one. While looking at a Canon film camera, complete with 3 lenses and 3 flash units, the owner of the store started to bargain with me. He offered me a deal to take the box of “junk”. I was hesitant. The camera wasn’t as old as I wanted and I am not a Canon girl at all. He then started a sentence that started with the words Rollei…I tried not to show my excitement. I am sure he thinks he got the best of the love sick girl who handed over her hard earned money….all for the love of a camera.

I love the camera. I was like a kid last night. I took it with me from room to room…just so I could sneak a glimpse across the room at it. It is not the camera that I hope to one day have. I did however get an amazing deal on it. I am beside myself with excitement to get film for it. Yes I ordered a roll or two last night, how could I not! I hope it is here before Christmas!

Sigh…see my new baby…isn’t she beautiful….

DAY 15:WHITE

Is it not disappointing that we have no snow for today? I will take frost though! It was really cool to wake up to this morning! I quickly took these images of the white outside before it went away.

December 3,2011

Happy Weekend! Today’s post is short and sweet. Dolly has not been feeling well, so yesterday the day was spent cuddling and doing Dolly things. There also will not be a post tomorrow since it is the weekend.

Here is a peek at my December Daily Album from yesterday.

DAY 3: RED

We all associate red and green with Christmas, so I thought it was an appropriate thing for us to capture. Red can be found anywhere. On your tree, on the mantle or anywhere you place decorations. We find it in our baking and in Christmas sweets (candy canes!) It can be seen in our yards, as many of the trees have red berries. Some of the birds even have red on them. Of course the most common place we see red is on Santa Clause. Today would be a great day to capture your kids on Santa’s knee!

My intention for today’s post of something red was to show pictures of Dolly in the tub with some red glow sticks. I discovered that red glow sticks glow pink…and I couldn’t have that! So instead today you will get an image of a bird that sits on the tree.

For this image I bumped up my ISO as I had all my lights off to ensure the glow from the tree was the prominent light source.Since it was so dark I had a low shutter speed. If you find yourself going below 80 you may need to use a tripod or set your camera on something sturdy.  I also used a macro lens. If you do not have one and are trying to get a close up of an image and find your camera just won’t focus…try backing up. It could be that you are to close to your subject. Also bring your f-stop to the lowest possible setting on your lens. That allows for you to let more light into your camera and gives you that creamy background you see behind the bird. If you are trying to take pictures of your tree, or any of your Christmas Decor with lights and are having a hard time, I have a full post coming next week to help you get the kind of “capture the glow” image we all desire. Look for it next week.

December 2,2011

Yesterday Dolly and I spent the day shopping with Grandma. We bought Baby Zeke some gifts as well as Raceboy82 and Raceboy83. Dolly was amazed with the snowing Christmas Tree in Toys’n'Treasures. She could have stayed all day and watch the snow falling, or better yet taken one home!

I printed my images after supper and put them into my December Daily Album, which I have shared a snapshot with you. I really can’t wait for a few years down the road when I can take the album out and remember the Holiday Season this year. It will be fun to browse through the month and relive all the moments.

DAY 2: HEIRLOOM
For today I wanted to take two images. Heirlooms from both sides of my family. The first one is my Grandma’s Nativity Scene. Grandma had great faith in God, and she loved the Holy Land. I found it very fitting that her heirloom would be the nativity scene she brought back from a trip to Israel.

The second would be an ornament from my great-great-grandma on my dad’s side of the family. I can remember looking at this as a little girl and being amazed at how small and delicate she is. I have been told that every year at Christmas great-great-grandma would bring this little girl out and place her on her Christmas Tree.

For your heirloom it is obvious that you can take photos of family heirlooms like I did. Perhaps  take a picture of something your children made for you or something you purchased yourself  that will become an heirloom. You could even incorporate an image of a grandparent, after all they too are family treasures. If taking a picture of an object like I did, be creative and stage your photo. For the nativity photo I placed it on the floor in front of my mom’s fireplace. In doing so I brought the comfort of sitting in front of the fire into my image. That is especially sentimental to me. Grandpa, Grandma  and I spent many cold winter afternoons and evenings in front of the fireplace visiting over a cup of tea or reading many good books. For the little doll, I placed her on the table with the Christmas Tree in the background. Using a shallow depth of field I was able to put the focus on the doll. Placing the tree in the background brings the tree into the image while keeping the doll as the main subject, after all, her place was on the tree for all those years.

Have fun!

And thank you to everyone who shared their images with me. They were wonderful! It was so fun to see all the tags popping up on my facebook page. I can’t wait for more!

Welcome December

This morning I was up early, drinking coffee and sitting quietly for a moment before Dolly and Company joined me.  I sat in the living room watching the horizon as the first hints of the day showed itself I was engulfed by the glow from the Christmas Tree. There is something about Christmas lights. They invoke feelings of tranquility in a busy world. It was while I was sitting there that I knew the image I wanted to use for today’s December Daily image. Whether  you are making a December Daily album or you just want to record images of your Holiday Season 2011, please join me for the next 25 days as I share my images with you.

To help myself along the way I made a list of things I wanted to capture. I am going to share my list with you. I encourage you to shoot along with me! I would love for you to share your images with me(simply add me as a friend on facebook and tag me in your photos so I can see them!)

DAY 1: HOME

To me home means safety, comfort and a place of rest. That is what I wanted to show in my image of home.

I love the feeling I get when I make my way to bed each night. My routine of locking the house up, climbing the stairs in the quiet. Listening to the sound of my foot falls as I gently tuck Dolly in…  as I kiss her forehead and see her sleeping so soundly in the glow of her pink Christmas Tree I feel it…it’s home. So my image for home, taken this morning while she slept soundly, is Dolly.

You could take a picture of your house, or your childhood home. Since a home is where we spend the majority of our holiday season it is more than four walls but memories within those walls.

Take it from outside with your Christmas lights all aglow or from within, like I did.

Good luck! And remember, I would love for you to share your month with me!
