• I have many journals that sit on the shelf at home. They chronicle many aspects of my life. I love to look through them, enjoying the things I have written or the pictures there in. It is my hope that as you look through these pages, that you too will enjoy the things placed so lovingly here.
It has been a journey that has seen me through many joys and a few heartaches. From the start of Crimson Chickadee and my growth as a person and as a photographer. From the realization that how many fans I have on my facebook page does not merit my worth, to the swelling in my heart as I hit publish to a post that I know will mean so much to the intended recipient.
I hope you join me often, with a good cup of coffee, and enjoy these pages as much as I do creating them.

December 17, 18 & 19, 2011

Last night as I was visiting with my parents I had that moment of realization that by this time next week, Christmas will be over. I was in disbelief.  We get so wrapped up in being busy that the days seem to fly by. Everyday is full of activities and things that need to be done. I know the week will be over before we know it. I am really going to try to slow down this week and enjoy it. That being said, I do have a photoshop mentoring session today and unless I want to teach it in my PJ’s I need to get on with this post!

DAY 17: LAUGHTER

When I look at this picture as a photographer I cringe…but when I look at it as a mom it makes me giggle. Dolly and Raceboy83 are the best of buds. They have such a little bond, it is heartwarming to watch them. Raceboy83 had Dolly giggling away as they played. Every time I would walk into the room they  whispered and laughed. I grabbed my camera and snapped a quick picture of them for my December Daily Album, thinking how sweet it was. It was only later that I figured out why they were laughing. They had opened all of the Advent Calendar and were being sneaky as they played with all the pieces. I was going to get after Raceboy83 but then I thought to myself, does it matter? No it doesn’t. What matters is that he was spending time with his little sister. Time that she will look back on and remember fondly.

DAY 18: HOLLY

Do you have a Christmas song that brings back memories? For me it is Have a Holly Jolly Christmas. I can remember when I was about 10, our family had the bright idea of each family preforming a skit at our  Johnson Family Christmas. Somehow my family decided to sing a song. Have a Holly Jolly Christmas. My job was to play the piano. I am a technical pianist…and I love to play anything Classical. I love triads, scales and pieces that require tricky finger work. Give me an intricate piece and I will pick away at it until my fingers know the song on their own. Ask me to play a piece as someone sings along and I fumble and struggle through the whole thing. I think it’s in my head. But I remember that Christmas, I practiced that song so much that all I saw was music notes in my sleep. I do not remember how we did, just that I was so glad to have it over with!  I know that there is a picture at mom’s of us all as they stood around me as I played. Since then I am not particularly fond of that song. I cringe every time I hear it. Naturally it is the first thing I thought of for the word Holly.

DAY 19: GIFT

This weekend as we were down skating on our partial rink, Raceboy83 put on his skates. As he glided around the ice, I thought to myself how thankful he should be to have a pair of skates on. Some of you may not know but a little over a month ago he broke his foot racing. Every bone across the top of his foot had a break in it. He needed to have surgery to repair the bone that goes to his big toe. The Doctor had said that the plate would need to be removed before Christmas. This past week he saw the specialist in the city, and he was given good news. The plate can stay. A gift for a young man who plays hockey and races dirt bikes.

December 16, 2011

Here we are at the end of another week. I can’t believe how fast the month of December is going by. It seems so strange to not have any snow here. December doesn’t feel much like December. We are in full swing “Operation Christmas” around here. We had Christmas lunch with papa Jim and my Aunt Darlene and Uncle Leif yesterday. I must say when I crawled into bed last night I was in awe of my day. It was one of those days that is just a great day from start to finish.  The best part was making Lefse. I am a true Scandihoovian (yes I know it’s Scandinavian…but how else would you expect it to be said by someone who says oofda?!?)  If you have ever had store made Lefse and never experienced it home made I feel so sorry for you. There is a night and day difference. The biggest difference(other than the thin, melt in your mouth-ness of home made Lefse) is the stories and traditions that go along with the baking process. The whole time mom rolled and I flipped we visited away and drank good strong coffee. She got to talking about Grandpa and his stories about Lefse. I shared a little yesterday about that, but there were stories I had not yet heard. I love my family history and I will be writing  all about those stories in my December Daily.

Enough talk from me…I will get onto some images!

Momma Temp rolls a mean piece of Lefse

Dolly waits for her share of the sample plate after we finished the first batch

Momma Temp took on Big Nik and got a picture of Dolly and I at the end of our day. Dolly was played out by the time we left. She fell asleep in the car on the way home and when I carried her in the house she was mumbling for me to not forget her prized piece of dough in the car.

It was a good day. Full of memories! I look forward to the next week and spending time with family.

DAY 16: TREE

I figured when I was driving into town that I had shown you enough images of my own tree to last a lifetime. While on our way home from lunch mom and I popped into a few of the local stores here. I pulled out my camera and snapped a few images of the trees the stores had in them.

This tree from A’s Unique Boutique is Dolly’s favorite. She said it’s perscet. (perfect) Her most favorite color is purple. How could she not love it…

This tree is from Voila! Momma Temp likes this one. I think it is the Scandihoovian in her. It is a very Scandinavian looking tree.

I like things a little more subdued than Dolly. Purple is not my favorite color. I do however find myself drawn to blue. This little guy and his tree were my favorite. I didn’t have the right lens on to fit this whole tree in, but I think you know just how the whole thing would look.

Make sure if you are local that you stop by both stores over the weekend and see what beautiful things they have to offer.

Since it is the weekend, this is the last December Daily Image post until Monday. I will have some tips for you next week on capturing images of your family and festivities. Have a great weekend!

December 15, 2011

It was over a year ago that I did a mentorship with a husband/wife photography team who shoots film. Not film from 15 years ago. I have one of those film cameras kicking around. In fact Raceboy82 uses it still. I mean old school film. I fell in love with the images they produced with it. I fell in love with the romance of it, how perfect would that fit into my branding I thought, after all I am always talking about our images being family heirlooms. I did not however fall in love with the price tag that I discovered was on the cameras they were shooting with.  Actually when I did a search on ebay I discovered that one of the cameras carried a price tag that rivaled my D700. EEK! I shelved the idea…for a while anyways.

The pull towards those old time images always gets me. It is hereditary,  I think. Step into momma Temps house and you will see at various times of the year, different “friends and family” tucked here and there. Mom collects those old pictures. You know how some people bring back a post card as a souvenir from the places they have traveled? Not mom, she finds some tucked away treasure of a store and finds a vintage photograph.  We imagine who they were and what they did, getting lost in the romance of the image. It is no wonder I am a photographer! lol  Being my mothers daughter I have been on the hunt. Literally. Every thrift store and antique store I can get into has me crawling the floor, peering up on shelves that require me to stand on my tippy toes, searching. Always searching. Someone has a treasure waiting for me to find.

Yesterday, I found one. While looking at a Canon film camera, complete with 3 lenses and 3 flash units, the owner of the store started to bargain with me. He offered me a deal to take the box of “junk”. I was hesitant. The camera wasn’t as old as I wanted and I am not a Canon girl at all. He then started a sentence that started with the words Rollei…I tried not to show my excitement. I am sure he thinks he got the best of the love sick girl who handed over her hard earned money….all for the love of a camera.

I love the camera. I was like a kid last night. I took it with me from room to room…just so I could sneak a glimpse across the room at it. It is not the camera that I hope to one day have. I did however get an amazing deal on it. I am beside myself with excitement to get film for it. Yes I ordered a roll or two last night, how could I not! I hope it is here before Christmas!

Sigh…see my new baby…isn’t she beautiful….

DAY 15:WHITE

Is it not disappointing that we have no snow for today? I will take frost though! It was really cool to wake up to this morning! I quickly took these images of the white outside before it went away.

I am off to have lunch with Papa Jim, Dolly and Grandma. Then it is lefse making time!

See you tomorrow!

December 14, 2011

Can you believe that there is ELEVEN days until Christmas? Wow! I think I am ready. I wrapped presents last night when the house was quiet…Dolly didn’t even notice that there was a pile of stuff under the tree this morning! lol I am sure when it registers she will be busy rooting around for the ones labeled with an A.

DAY 14: BAKING
Tomorrow is our actual Christmas baking day. We are making lefse with Grandma. I can’t wait! I love lefse….did I say I can’t wait? Lefse is a tradition in our family. It makes me think so fondly of my Grandparents. Grandpa was and expert “lefse flipper”. When I was little I can remember watching as Grandma rolled and he flipped. He would always tell me that it was perfect when the lefse had “Chinese” writing on it.(brown marks from cooking)
Memories are such a strong part of us, aren’t they?
It is with the thought of memories that I will get onto my images for baking. Dolly loves to bake. Yesterday she made Dolly’s pancakes. I try to let her do everything on her own. That includes making mistakes. So when she missed the mixer with her flour and had to scoop it off the counter I thought how these moments are the memories I will have of her baking.

Image Settings:ISO 2000   F/1.4   SS 1/200

Today as you take your image of baking I want to encourage you not to take images of just what it is you make. Take the details, the little things that form your memories. Details that may in time fade away, like your precious little ones hands as they fumble with the heavy measuring cup. Or the look they give you as their eyes, big as saucers, peer at you over the mixer paddle while they lick it clean.
Enjoy your day!

DAY 13: INSPIRATION

For me today’s post has been the easiest by far. When I think of the word inspiration I know exactly where I find mine. In fact, I go for my inspiration here, my comfort, and when searching for advice. No it’s not google. It is the word of God, my Bible.

Although it is fun to get wrapped up in the commercialism of the Christmas season, the tree, the shopping and of course Santa…if you have faith in God, you are also celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ.

Most of the time I keep my blog pretty neutral. I do voice my opinions occasionally when I see something that bothers me, like bullying. I am also of the mindset that I should lead by example, not stand on a soapbox and preach. Today however, inspiration falls to my faith in God, so excuse me while I get up on my box.

I do not believe that December 25 is the actual day the Jesus was born. Try googling the origins of Christmas. You may be surprised at what you find.I was the first time I did. It was at that time that I thought long and hard about Christmas, the tree and all that goes with it. My conclusion was one that is of my own opinion. I do however  celebrate with my family and my church at this time. I do believe that Jesus was sent to earth so that I may have eternal life. I have a Godly heritage, and celebrate the birth of Christ.

Whether or not you celebrate the Christmas season as one of faith or not, it still is a time of giving. After all how many of you have given to the food bank, the Salvation Army, Operation Christmas Child or any other area of need?

Have you taken the time to examine your own needs? Do you need inspiration in your own life? I will end my post with something I found on Pinterest a while back. I hope when the need arises you will find the sort of inspiration you are seeking.
