It has become a tradition in my family to pass ’spanking the baby’ on to the youngest generation. To be honest with you I think the ’spanking baby’ thing totally skipped me…but two of my kids love it.
What is ’spanking the baby’? It is kneading bread dough…you didn’t think we actually spanked a baby did you??
I can remember when I was around 4, I spent a lot of time on the farm with my grandparents. I loved it there. Grandma was such a good farm wife…and a very hard worker. She would get up early to make bread…and when it was time for kneading the dough I would be called into the kitchen. There would be a chair waiting for me, and a ‘cup of coffee’. I would get my turn at ’spanking the baby’. Although I did not enjoy the whole cooking aspect of it I am so happy to have those memories of grandma and I. My mom has continued on faithfully with ’spanking the baby’. Logan loves to cook and Ainsley has a radar that goes off when anyone enters the kitchen. They have both spent lots of time ’spanking the baby’ with grandma.
Ainsley came to me this morning and asked me if she could ‘make’ and ’spank the baby’. I desperately tried to think of something we could cook….that involved baby spanking. An all time classic came to mind. PLAYDOUGH! Koolaid playdough to be exact. I will post the recipe at the bottom of the post for those of you who want to try your hand at ’spanking the baby’!

KoolAid Playdough
3 cups flour
1/2 cups salt
2 Koolaide packages
2 cups boiling water
Mix dry ingredients together. Add boiling water. Knead on floured board.
Can add flour until desired consistency.
This playdough will last for a long time when stored correctly.
